If you have followed me for any length of time on the ole blog, you should know by now i am a huge fan of stationary indoor bike trainers.
Last winter i upgraded to the cyclops magnus and never looked back! It has been a game changer from my fluid 2 and seeing gains in power and speed on a trainer that can hammer me on the tension more than the fluid 2 could.
I am so much a fan, that’s one of the first things I tell my athletes to get. Nothing will prep you for race season over the winter, keep your gains or even add to your fitness more than an indoor trainer.
Heck, I even use it during the warmer months as a faster and safer way to get a ride done.
But, i did get a question I hadn’t put much thought in a while.
What about tires?
Ya… what about tires?
Trainers are notorious for shredding tires, so don’t go slamming your Zipp 808 tubulars on there and crank away. No no!
Some athletes will buy a dedicated trainer wheel and tire, swap out and ride indoors all winter. Some athletes just change out to a more durable tire.
Me? Well after not paying attention and having a blowout on the trainer a few years back, I opted to keep the same tires and wheels on year round and go with durable tires. I do have my race wheels that never see the trainer, but I wanted to be able to go from trainer to road and back without messing with changing wheels or tires. Believe it or not, we get 60+ days in Jan and Feb and actually see chances to ride outside during the lunch hour. But, you won’t catch me outside riding in anything below 40.
Below is just a few tires I’d recommend that I have had good experience with and won’t break the bank. I have Duro Stingers on my tri bike and approaching 4000 miles of road and trainer time without issues. Tread is a little down, but not bare and knock on wood, no punctures.
